My Challenge

Today marks a month since my diagnosis with Ulcerative Colitis. A month ago I had never even heard or knew what an IBD was. I have been doing a lot of reading and have had the opportunity to take part in attending a conference put on by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation. I still feel like my knowledge is lacking on the subject but since this is something I am supposedly going to have my whole life, I have time to learn. :)

At the conference I heard about a thing called the "Simple Carbohydrate Diet". This intrigued me and I soon ordered a book that offered some explanations and recipes with foods that are aimed to help reduce symptoms and possibly put my colitis into remission.

Who I am and what my challenge is:
  • I am a scientist. I plan to put myself through the diet and document if and how it affects me in a technical way. My degree is in Mechanical Engineering so don't expect a well informed medical journal. :)
  • I am an athlete. I am very passionate about bicycle racing and I am just starting to get into triathlons as well. I plan to document on this blog these events as I try to fundraise for The Crohn's and Colitis Foundation. By this time next month I will begin fundraising for Team Challenge Cycle. I plan on competing with Team Challenge this September and my goal is to be a top finisher in the event.
  • I am a Christian. This topic may not come up much here but I will occasionally be bringing up matters of my faith in my posts.
